Chapter Eight

Angelica bit back an anticipatory smile as she and Christian drove their cattle up to the camp. Everyone else was there ahead of them, setting the stage perfectly for the little drama she had planned.

Ed Harley and Curly were holding the cattle while the rest of the crew ate their noon meal. Stumpy and Miles were just unsaddling their horses when Angelica and Christian rode up to the improvised corral.

“Hello, gentlemen,” Angelica sang out, giving them her best smile. This was going to be difficult, she realized, knowing that her hair was hanging down her back in a tangled mess and her clothes were dusty and she once again smelled of horse. Still, if flirting was what he wanted, flirting was what he would get. “Did you boys have a successful morning?”

“Yes, ma’am, we did,” Miles confirmed, returning her smile with a slightly puzzled expression, as if he noticed a difference in her but could not quite figure out what is was.

“Except that Miles almost got us killed,” Stumpy contradicted grumpily as Angelica swung down from her horse. “He cornered some old mossy horn back in the brush, and that critter nearly tromped us both.”

“Oh, you poor darling!” she exclaimed in an excess of sympathy, rushing to his side. “Your aren’t hurt, are you?” she inquired.

Stumpy looked at her like she was crazy. “Hell, no,” he said in some amazement.

“Oh, I’m so glad!” she exclaimed, batting her eyes furiously. I just don’t know what I’d do without you.” Stumpy simply stated, speechless for once. Angelica decided to switch her attention to Miles. “How naughty of you, Miles, to get yourself in a fix like that,” she scolded, moving to his side and laying a hand on his shoulder. "Why, my heart’s just pounding a mile a minute at the very thought of you getting hurt.” She pressed her other hand to her bosom dramatically as if to still that clamoring heart and batted her eyes a few more times for good measure.

Miles’s dark eyes now reflected amusement, but his tone was somber when he said, “I’m sorry to distress you, Miss Ross.”

“You should be,” she informed him, giving his shoulder a playful swat. “Now I’m all aflutter. Why, I feel positively faint. Oh, Mr. Sanders, I wonder if you’d help me,” she called.

Dave Sanders had just wandered into earshot, having been answering a call of nature elsewhere. He immediately detoured to join the group. “What do you need?” he asked, flushing as he always did whenever he was forced to speak directly to Angelica.

“I’m feeling a little weak. I wondered if I might impose on you to unsaddle my horse for me?” She fluttered her eyelashes again.

“S-sure, miss,” he said, frowning a little. “Something wrong with your eye?”

Miles coughed behind her, but she ignored him. “Oh, no,” she assured Sanders with a dazzling smile. “But it’s awfully sweet of you to ask.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he muttered, obviously confused but unwilling to make any inquiries.

Angelica turned back to Miles, not a bit surprised to find him grinning from ear to ear.
